The Role:
As an Assistant Estimator, you will support the estimating team in preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for projects up to £20 million. Working closely with senior estimators, design, commercial, and delivery teams, you'll help ensure that projects are priced efficiently, competitively, and in line with client expectations. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to progress their career in estimating within a main contracting environment.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in preparing detailed and accurate cost estimates for projects across all construction disciplines and work packages.
Support in reviewing project scope, specifications, and drawings to ensure all costs align with client and legislative requirements.
Work collaboratively with the wider preconstruction team to develop and convert tender opportunities.
Help produce cost plans and estimates throughout the design and tender stages.
Support the senior estimator in providing cost advice and guidance to design teams and clients.
Contribute to identifying risks, opportunities, and value engineering options to improve project value.
Assist with take-offs and measurement in accordance with SMM7, NRM2, or similar standards.
Gather and analyse subcontractor quotations and supplier pricing for inclusion in tenders.
Maintain accurate cost databases, tender books, and comparison schedules.
Support the preparation of handover information for the delivery team following project award.
Participate in pricing design or construction changes as projects develop through RIBA stages.
Essential Criteria
Some experience within a main contractor or cost consultancy environment (ideally in estimating or preconstruction).
Basic understanding of key construction disciplines (e.g., M&E, structural, groundworks, and finishes).
Strong numerical and analytical skills, with excellent attention to detail.
Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and tender documents.
Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other estimating or cost planning tools.
Good communication and organisational skills, with a proactive approach to learning.
Valid CSCS card (or willingness to obtain).
Desirable Criteria
Relevant qualification in construction or a related discipline (e.g., HNC/HND, NVQ Level 3/4, or degree).
Experience using estimating software such as Conquest, Causeway, or similar.
Working knowledge of SMM7 or NRM2 measurement standards.
Interest in or progress toward professional membership (e.g., RICS or CIOB).
